How to make a US passport photo

  1. Take a photo against a plain white or off-white wall in even light, without glasses, facing the camera with a neutral expression.
  2. Drop it here; "USA passport / visa" is selected.
  3. Drag and zoom so the top of your hair touches the red line and your chin falls in the green band.
  4. Download the photo (600 × 600 px, suitable for online renewal and the DS-160 visa form) or a 4 × 6 in sheet with six 2 × 2 photos to print at a pharmacy or photo lab.

US passport photo rules

The US Department of State requires a colour photo 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), with the head measuring 1 to 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, taken within the last six months. The background must be white or off-white with no shadows. Glasses are not allowed (since 2016) unless you have a medical statement, and hats or head coverings only for religious or medical reasons. Digital photos for online renewal must be at least 600 × 600 pixels.

Printing a 4 × 6 sheet at a store often costs well under a dollar, compared with $15 or more for passport photo services. Print at actual size. The tool crops and positions your photo in your browser; it never uploads it.
