How to crop an image
- Drop a photo on the box above or tap to choose one.
- Pick an aspect ratio such as 1:1 for profile pictures, 4:5 for Instagram portrait posts or 16:9 for video thumbnails. Free lets you draw any shape.
- Drag on the image to draw the crop box, drag inside it to move it, or drag a corner to resize it. It works with a mouse, a trackpad or your finger.
- Rotate by 90°, flip, or use Straighten to fix a tilted horizon.
- Choose PNG, JPEG or WebP and click Download.
The faint lines inside the box divide it into thirds. Placing the subject or the horizon on these lines (the rule of thirds) usually gives a more balanced picture.
Crop, rotate and flip in one place
The crop is taken from the full-resolution image, not the preview, so no detail is lost. The pixel size of the result is shown under the image. Circle mode makes a round crop with a transparent background, saved as PNG, which is ideal for avatars and logos. When you straighten a photo by a few degrees, the corners outside the original picture are transparent; crop them away before downloading, or save as JPEG to fill them with white.
Privacy
Everything runs in your browser. Your image is never uploaded, and the downloaded file is a new image without the original EXIF metadata.
Does cropping reduce image quality?
No. Cropping only removes pixels outside the box. PNG keeps the remaining pixels exactly; JPEG and WebP are saved at high quality (92%).
How do I crop a photo to a square?
Choose the 1:1 ratio. The box becomes a square that you can move and resize, and the download will be exactly square.
Why is my photo the wrong way round after upload elsewhere?
Some phones store rotation in metadata instead of the pixels. This tool applies that rotation, so the downloaded file looks the same everywhere.
Can I crop on my phone?
Yes. Drag with one finger to draw and move the crop box. The page does not need an app or an account.
