How to make a Canadian passport photo
- Take a photo against a plain white or light background with uniform lighting and a neutral expression.
- Drop it here; "Canada passport (50 × 70 mm)" is selected.
- Align the top of the head with the red line and the chin within the green band, centred.
- Download a print sheet. Canadian paper applications need two identical prints.
Canadian passport photo requirements
Canada uses an unusually large format: photos must be 50 mm wide and 70 mm high, and the head, from chin to crown, must be between 31 mm and 36 mm. The background must be plain white or light-coloured, the photo less than six months old, and the face shown with a neutral expression, mouth closed and eyes open. One of the two printed photos must be stamped on the back by the photographer with the studio name, address and the date the photo was taken, which is why many applicants still use a commercial photographer.
For online renewals, Canada accepts a digital photo taken by a commercial provider. Use this tool to check framing or to prepare test prints. Your photo stays on your device.
