How to make a Schengen visa photo

  1. Take a photo facing the camera against a plain light grey, light blue or white background, evenly lit, with a neutral expression.
  2. Drop it here; the Schengen / EU format is selected.
  3. Zoom until the head from chin to crown fills the guides (32–36 mm, about 70–80% of the photo height).
  4. Download a print sheet and attach one photo to your visa application form.

Biometric photo standards

Schengen countries follow the ICAO standard for machine-readable travel documents. Photos must be 35 × 45 mm, recent (within six months), in colour, sharp and in focus, with the face centred and looking straight at the camera. Eyes must be open and visible, without reflections on glasses, hair away from the eyes, and the mouth closed. Head coverings are only allowed for religious reasons, with the face from chin to forehead visible.

Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and other EU states use the same 35 × 45 mm size for passports and ID cards, although some now take the photo digitally at the office or require a certified photographer upload. Check the consulate's rules. Processing happens on your device only.
