How to make a UK passport photo

  1. Stand in front of a plain cream or light grey wall in even light and have someone take a photo of you with a neutral expression.
  2. Drop the photo here; "UK passport" is selected.
  3. Fit the top of your head to the red line and your chin into the green band (head 29–34 mm).
  4. Download the digital photo or a print sheet. Printed photos for paper forms must be 35 mm wide and 45 mm high.

HM Passport Office photo rules

UK passport photos must show your full head, shoulders and face with a plain expression, eyes open and clearly visible, nothing covering your face, and no shadows or reflections. The background should be plain cream or light grey. For printed photos, the size is 35 × 45 mm with the head between 29 and 34 mm from chin to crown. Online applications accept a digital photo of at least 600 × 750 pixels; you can upload your own photo directly in the online service.

Photos must be less than a month old for online applications. Glasses are best removed. This tool helps with size and positioning only and does not change your appearance; everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
