When does Ramadan start?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, which is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, so Ramadan moves earlier each year. Expected start dates (first day of fasting) are about 18 February 2026, 8 February 2027, 28 January 2028, 16 January 2029 and 6 January 2030, with a second Ramadan beginning around 26 December 2030. These are estimates: the actual start depends on the sighting of the new crescent moon or on the calculation method used by your country or mosque, and can differ by a day.
Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days and ends with Eid al-Fitr. Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, so fasting hours vary with latitude and season; they are shorter now that Ramadan falls in winter in the northern hemisphere. Check your local mosque's announcement and timetable as the date approaches.
