When does spring start?
Astronomical spring in the northern hemisphere starts at the March equinox, on 19, 20 or 21 March, when day and night are roughly equal in length everywhere. The countdown uses 20 March, the most common date this decade. Meteorological spring begins on 1 March and lasts until 31 May. South of the equator, spring begins in September.
After the equinox, days in the northern hemisphere become longer than nights, gaining two to four minutes of daylight each day at mid latitudes. Most of Europe and North America also change their clocks to daylight saving time in March (the US on the second Sunday, Europe on the last Sunday).
