When is Chinese New Year?

Chinese New Year (the Spring Festival, or Lunar New Year) falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice, between 21 January and 20 February. Upcoming dates: 17 February 2026 (Year of the Horse), 6 February 2027 (Goat), 26 January 2028 (Monkey), 13 February 2029 (Rooster) and 3 February 2030 (Dog). The countdown uses these published dates.

Celebrations last 15 days, ending with the Lantern Festival. It is the biggest holiday in China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and for Chinese communities worldwide, and is also celebrated as Tết in Vietnam and Seollal in Korea, sometimes on a slightly different date. Family reunion dinners take place on New Year's Eve, red envelopes (hongbao) are given to children, and travel peaks for weeks around the date.
