How to make an Instagram grid

  1. Drop a large photo or design on the box above.
  2. Keep 3 columns (an Instagram profile is 3 posts wide) and choose 1, 2 or 3 rows.
  3. Pick the tile shape: 3:4 matches the current profile grid, Square matches older grids and feeds that show 1:1 posts.
  4. Download the ZIP and upload the tiles starting from the highest number, ending with tile 1.

Posting order matters

Instagram puts each new post at the top left of your profile. Tile 1 (top left of the picture) must therefore be posted last. With a 3×3 grid, post tile 9 first, then 8, 7 and so on down to 1. Post them one after another without anything in between, or the grid will shift.

Instagram switched profile grids from square to 3:4 portrait thumbnails in 2025, so the 3:4 tile shape gives a seamless profile. Each tile is still a normal post, and in the feed it appears on its own, so a design with something interesting in every tile works better than one where some tiles are empty. Use a high-resolution image: for a 3×3 grid of 1080 px wide tiles, the source should be about 3240 pixels wide.

Tiles are cut in your browser at full resolution; nothing is uploaded.

FAQ

In what order do I post the grid?

Highest number first, finishing with tile 1, so the picture assembles correctly on your profile.

Should tiles be square or 3:4?

Use 3:4 for today’s Instagram profile grid. Square tiles get cropped at the top and bottom there.

Can I post the tiles as a carousel instead?

For a swipeable panorama, use 1 row and up to 10 columns with square or 4:5 tiles.
