Uses for a blurred image

A blurred photo makes a calm background for text on slides, websites, video thumbnails and phone wallpapers, because it keeps the colors and mood without competing with the words on top. Blurring selected regions hides faces, house numbers, licence plates and screen contents before sharing a picture publicly.

The blur is a smooth, Gaussian-like blur made from three passes of a box filter, and its radius scales with the image size, so the preview matches the full-resolution download. Edges of selected areas are blurred using the surrounding pixels, so there are no hard borders.

For hiding sensitive text such as passwords or account numbers, use a black bar rather than blur. Everything runs in your browser and the image is never uploaded.

FAQ

How do I blur the background of a photo?

This tool blurs rectangles, not automatic subject outlines. For portrait-style background blur, use a phone portrait mode or an editor with masking.

Can blurred text be read again?

Light blur on short text can sometimes be guessed. Use high strength or a black bar for sensitive information.

Does blurring change the image size?

No. The download has the same dimensions as your original.
