How to add text to a photo
- Drop a photo on the box, or start with the gradient background to make a quote card.
- Type your text in the box. Press Enter for a new line.
- Pick a font, size, color and alignment. Add an outline, a shadow or a semi-transparent background box to keep text readable on busy photos.
- Drag the text on the image to place it. Click Add text for more text layers, and tap any text to select and edit it.
- Download the result at full resolution (up to 3000 px).
Making text readable on photos
Text on a photo has to compete with everything behind it. Place it over calm areas such as sky, walls or out-of-focus backgrounds, and use one of three tricks when the background is busy: a soft shadow for light text on mixed backgrounds, an outline for bold meme-style captions, or a background box for subtitles and quotes. Size is relative to the image, so a size of 8 looks the same on a small screenshot and a 12-megapixel photo.
Fonts come from your device, so script and comic fonts look a little different on Windows, Mac and phones. Sans bold and Impact are reliable everywhere. For classic top and bottom meme captions, the meme maker is quicker; for copyright text on many photos at once, use the watermark tool.
Nothing is uploaded: the text is drawn onto your photo in your browser, and no watermark is added.
