How to remove a background

  1. Drop a photo with a plain background on the box above. The background color is detected from the image corners.
  2. If needed, tap the background in the preview to pick the exact color to remove.
  3. Raise Tolerance until the background disappears, and use Edge softness for smooth edges around hair and fuzzy outlines.
  4. Tick Only remove background connected to the edges if parts of your subject share the background color, such as white text on a white backdrop.
  5. Click Download PNG for a transparent image, or tick Replace with color to put the subject on a new solid background.

How chroma keying works

This is the same technique film studios use with green screens. Each pixel is compared with the background color in the YCbCr color space, which separates brightness from hue. Pixels close to the key become transparent, pixels far from it stay, and the ones in between become partly transparent so edges blend naturally. Spill removal takes away the green or blue tint that bounces off a colored backdrop onto the edges of your subject.

It works best with an evenly lit background that does not appear in the subject: product photos on white, logos on a solid color, video stills from a green screen. Busy backgrounds such as a living room need an AI model, which this tool does not use.

Private and offline

All processing runs in your browser. The image is never uploaded, and the result is exported at full resolution.

Why do parts of my subject disappear?

Those parts are close to the background color. Lower the tolerance, or turn on "connected to the edges" so only the surrounding background is removed.

Why is there a colored fringe around my subject?

Increase edge softness slightly, keep spill removal on, or pick the key color from a spot right next to the subject.

Which format keeps transparency?

PNG. If you save as JPEG elsewhere, the transparent areas will turn white or black.
