How to make an audio file louder

  1. Drop the quiet audio file: a lecture recording, voice memo, podcast or song.
  2. Raise the boost in decibels; +6 dB sounds roughly twice as loud.
  3. Keep the limiter ceiling around −1 dB so peaks never clip, then preview and download as WAV or MP3.

Louder without distortion

Simply multiplying the signal pushes the loudest peaks past digital full scale, which flattens the waveform into harsh, crackling distortion. This booster adds gain and then a fast limiter: when the boosted signal approaches the ceiling, the limiter turns it down just enough for that moment, so quiet passages get louder while peaks stay clean. It is the same principle broadcast and streaming engineers use to make speech consistent.

For speech, 6–12 dB of boost usually works well; music that is already mastered loudly gains little and can start to sound squashed. If a recording has a lot of background noise, boosting raises the noise too. Processing happens in your browser at the file's sample rate, and the file is never uploaded.

FAQ

How much can I boost?

Up to 24 dB. Beyond about 12 dB the limiter works hard and the sound gets compressed.

Will it fix distorted audio?

No. Distortion already in the recording cannot be removed.

Can I boost a video's sound?

You can drop a video to boost its soundtrack, then download the audio.
