How star signs are worked out
Western astrology divides the year into twelve signs according to where the Sun appeared against the constellations of the zodiac, starting with Aries at the spring equinox around 21 March. The dates shown are the commonly used ones; because the exact moment the Sun changes sign varies slightly from year to year, people born on the first or last day of a sign (a "cusp") may find different sources disagree. The Chinese zodiac works differently, cycling through twelve animals by year; strictly the year starts at Chinese New Year in late January or February, so January birthdays may belong to the previous animal.
Astrology is entertainment, not science: controlled studies have found no link between star signs and personality. It is still a fun conversation starter and a part of many cultures' traditions. The calculation runs in your browser.
