Typing Speed Test

Measure your WPM and accuracy

Click the words (or tap on a phone) and start typing. The timer starts with your first key. Space moves to the next word.

How to take the typing test

  1. Choose a length: 15 seconds for a quick burst, 60 seconds for the standard test, or 2 minutes for a stamina check.
  2. Click the words and start typing. The timer starts on your first key press. Press space after each word; mistakes are shown in red, and Backspace lets you fix the previous word if it was wrong.
  3. When time runs out you see your words per minute, accuracy and raw speed. Share your score and challenge a friend to beat it.

How words per minute is measured

Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM), where a "word" is five characters including spaces, so long and short words count fairly. This test counts only correctly typed characters for your WPM, which is the standard used by most typing tests; raw WPM counts everything you typed, mistakes included. Accuracy is the share of key presses that were correct. Tick punctuation and numbers to practise more realistic text.

The average adult types around 40 WPM. Office jobs that involve a lot of typing often expect 50–60 WPM, fast typists reach 80–100, and competitive typists exceed 150. The quickest way to improve is touch typing: keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF JKL;), use every finger, look at the screen rather than the keyboard, and practise accuracy first, since speed follows. Short daily sessions work better than long ones. Your scores are saved only in this browser.

What is a good typing speed?

40 WPM is average, 60 WPM is good for most jobs, and 80+ WPM is fast.

Does accuracy affect my WPM?

Yes. WPM counts only correct characters, so mistakes lower it. Raw WPM shows your speed including errors.

Can I take the test on a phone?

Yes, tap the words to bring up the keyboard. Phone scores are usually lower than on a physical keyboard.
