F1 Reaction Test

Five red lights, lights out – how fast do you react?

How to play the F1 reaction test

  1. Press Start. Five red lights switch on one at a time, one second apart, just like the start gantry at a Formula 1 Grand Prix.
  2. After a random pause the lights go out. Tap, click or press space the instant they do.
  3. React before the lights go out and it is a jump start. Your best and average times are kept, and you can share your time as a challenge.

How fast are Formula 1 drivers?

A typical person reacts to a visual signal in about 200 to 250 milliseconds. F1 drivers train their starts relentlessly and usually react in roughly 150 to 200 ms; anything under 200 ms here is very good. The random delay between the fifth light and lights out, up to a few seconds in real races, stops drivers anticipating the start, and the same applies in this game.

Your score also includes a little delay from your screen, browser and mouse or touchscreen, usually 10 to 50 ms, so compare times on the same device. Wired mice and high refresh rate monitors give the fairest results. Warm up with a few tries, stay relaxed and focus on the lights rather than the button. Nothing is recorded except on your own device.

FAQ

What is a good F1 reaction time?

Under 200 ms is excellent; most people score 200 to 300 ms on their first tries.

What is a jump start?

Reacting before the lights go out. In a real race that earns a penalty.

Why is there a random delay?

So nobody can predict the start; you have to react, not guess.
