Random Team Generator

Split a list of names into random, even teams

How to make random teams

  1. Type or paste the names, one per line.
  2. Choose "Number of teams" or "People per team" and enter the number.
  3. Press Make teams. Press it again for a different split, then copy the teams to share them.

Fair groups in seconds

The generator shuffles the list with a cryptographically secure random generator and the Fisher–Yates algorithm, then deals names out one by one like cards. Every arrangement is equally likely, and team sizes never differ by more than one person: 23 students in 5 teams become three teams of 5 and two of 4. Asking for people per team works the same way: 23 people in teams of 4 gives 6 teams, as even as possible.

Teachers use it for group work and lab partners, coaches for training games, managers for workshops and breakout rooms, and friends for quiz nights, five-a-side and board games. Random teams avoid the awkwardness of picking sides and mix people who would not normally work together. The list is stored in the page link, so you can bookmark your class or squad and reuse it next time.

Is the split really random?

Yes. It uses crypto.getRandomValues for an unbiased shuffle.
