How to split group expenses
- Add everyone in the group: flatmates, a trip, a stag or hen party, a shared gift.
- Add each expense with what it was for, the amount, who paid, and who it should be split between. Untick people who were not part of it, for example someone who skipped a dinner.
- Settle up shows the fewest payments needed to make everyone even; Balances shows what each person paid and owes.
- Tap Copy link or Share to send the whole list to the group. The link contains the expenses, so everyone sees the same result without an app or account.
How the settlement works
For each expense, the amount is divided equally between the people it was split among (to the cent, with any odd cents spread fairly), and the payer is credited with the full amount. A person's balance is what they paid minus their share. Positive means they are owed money; negative means they owe. The calculator then repeatedly matches the person who owes the most with the person who is owed the most, which settles the group in at most one payment fewer than the number of people, usually far fewer than paying each other back expense by expense.
The data stays on your device and in the link you choose to share; there is no server, sign-up or tracking. Anyone with the link can see the expenses, so share it only with your group. Changes made by others create a new link; send the latest one when you settle.
Is this like Splitwise?
It does the same calculation for one group, without an app, account or ads. The shareable link replaces syncing.
Can I split unequally?
Split equally between the people who shared each item. For one person paying more, add that part as a separate expense split to them alone.
What happens to odd cents?
They are spread one cent at a time, so the shares always add up exactly to the amount paid.
