How to sort a list alphabetically
- Paste your list, one item per line.
- Press the highlighted Sort A → Z button. Z–A, natural order (numbers in numeric order), length, reverse and shuffle are one click away.
- Copy the sorted list back into your document or spreadsheet.
Sorting that does what you expect
Simple sorting compares character codes, which puts every capital letter before every lowercase letter and puts "item 10" before "item 2". This sorter uses your browser's language-aware comparison, so "apple" and "Apple" sit next to each other and accented letters such as é sort next to e. Natural order goes further and compares numbers by value, which is what you want for file names, chapter lists and version numbers.
Alphabetising is useful for bibliographies and reference lists, glossaries, guest lists, inventories, vocabulary lists, keyword lists and code such as import statements or CSS properties. Blank lines sort to the top, so remove them first with the "Remove empty lines" operation. Combine with "Remove duplicates" for a clean, unique, sorted list.
Everything is sorted locally in your browser.
FAQ
How do I alphabetize a list in Word?
Select the list and use Home > Sort, or paste it here and copy the sorted result.
What is natural sort order?
Numbers inside text are compared by value, so 2 comes before 10.
Is the sort case-sensitive?
Upper and lower case versions of a letter sort next to each other. Tick Ignore case to treat them as identical.
