Why remove emoji?
Emoji are great in messages but cause problems elsewhere. Some databases and older systems cannot store them and show question marks or reject the text. Text analysis, such as word counts, sentiment tools and translation, can be thrown off by them. Formal documents, reports and quotes in press releases usually need them removed, and screen readers read every emoji aloud, which makes heavily decorated text tiring to listen to.
The remover uses Unicode's emoji properties, so it catches new emoji too, plus the invisible joiners and variation selectors that hold multi-part emoji together. Ordinary symbols such as Β©, β’ and digits are kept unless they are shown as emoji. If you want to remove other symbols or punctuation as well, tick the matching options on the same page.
The cleaning happens in your browser.
