Write a dollar amount in words for a check

How to write a check amount in words

  1. Type the amount in numbers, such as 1234.56.
  2. Copy the words. They follow the standard check format: whole dollars in words, then "and", then the cents as a fraction over 100.
  3. Write them on the line under "Pay to the order of", starting at the far left, and draw a line through any empty space after them.

Check writing rules

Banks treat the written amount (the legal line) as the official amount if it differs from the numbers in the box, so write it carefully. Hyphenate numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine (forty-five), do not use "and" anywhere except before the cents, and always include the cents even when there are none: $500.00 is "Five hundred and 00/100 dollars". Examples: $1,234.56 → One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100; $75 → Seventy-five and 00/100; $2,019.07 → Two thousand nineteen and 07/100.

Start with a capital letter and fill the rest of the line with a dash so nobody can add words. The preview shows how it fits on a check. Other currencies such as pounds and euros are available in the currency menu, and British cheques often include "and" after hundred; switch style to UK if your bank prefers that. Nothing you type leaves your device.
