Function Grapher

Plot up to five functions of x, pan and pinch to zoom

How to graph a function

  1. Type a function of x in one of the boxes, such as x^2 - 3x + 2 or sin(x)/x. Up to five functions are drawn in different colors.
  2. Drag the graph to move around. Scroll, pinch with two fingers, or use + and - to zoom.
  3. Point at the graph to read the coordinates, and use Reset view to return to the origin.

What you can plot

Polynomials, rational functions, roots, exponentials and logarithms, trigonometric and hyperbolic functions, absolute values with |x| or abs(x), and combinations of them. Multiplication can be implied, so 2x, 3(x+1) and x sin(x) all work. Trig functions use radians: one full wave of sin(x) is 2π ≈ 6.28 units long.

Where a function is undefined, such as sqrt(x) for negative x or 1/x at 0, the line is broken instead of joined, so asymptotes do not show as false vertical lines. The grid spacing adapts as you zoom so labels stay readable.

Tips for students

Plot two functions to find where they intersect: the x values where the curves cross solve f(x) = g(x). Compare x^2, x^2 + 2 and (x - 2)^2 to see how shifts work, or sin(x) and sin(2x) for frequency. Your functions are saved in this browser, and nothing is sent anywhere.

How do I type a power or a square root?

Use ^ for powers (x^3) and sqrt(x) or x^(1/2) for roots. Use cbrt(x) for cube roots of negative numbers.

Is log base 10 or base e?

log is base 10 and ln is the natural logarithm (base e). log2 is base 2.

Can I plot x as a function of y or a circle?

Only functions of the form y = f(x). For a circle of radius 3, plot sqrt(9 - x^2) and -sqrt(9 - x^2).
