How to convert HEIC to JPG
- Drop one or more .heic or .heif photos on the box (for example from an iPhone or iPad, or copied from iCloud Photos).
- Choose JPG (smaller, works everywhere) or PNG (lossless), and the JPG quality.
- Download each converted photo, or all of them as one ZIP.
What is HEIC?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads since iOS 11. It stores photos at roughly half the size of JPEG at similar quality, using the HEVC video codec. The catch is compatibility: Windows needs an extension, many websites, upload forms, older Android phones and photo printing services reject HEIC files. Converting to JPG fixes that.
The page loads an open-source HEIC decoder (libheif, compiled to WebAssembly) the first time you convert a photo. Runs in your browser. Your files are not uploaded. The output keeps the full resolution, the colour profile and the correct orientation, plus the photo's EXIF details such as the date it was taken. Location (GPS) is removed unless you untick Remove location (GPS). Files that are already JPG or PNG are passed through unchanged.
Tip: to stop your iPhone creating HEIC files, go to Settings โ Camera โ Formats and choose "Most Compatible". To keep HEIC on the phone but send JPEGs, set Settings โ Photos โ Transfer to Mac or PC to "Automatic".
Example: three iPhone-size photos
We converted three 12-megapixel HEIC photos (4000 ร 3000 pixels, about 1 MB each) in Chrome on a laptop. All three came out as full-size JPGs in 4.5 seconds, about 1.5 seconds per photo including the first-time decoder download, and downloaded as one ZIP. Compared with a lossless decode by Apple's own converter (sips), our JPGs scored 0.994 and 0.997 on SSIM, a similarity measure where 1 means identical; Apple's converter, saving a JPG at the same 92% quality, scored 0.996 and 0.998. Our files were about 22% smaller (1.9 MB against 2.4 MB). A photo taken sideways came out upright, and a JPG dropped in by mistake was passed through unchanged.
How it compares with a free online converter
| This tool | CloudConvert (free) | |
|---|---|---|
| Conversions per day | No limit | 10 conversion credits |
| File size | Your device memory | 1 GB per file |
| Photos per batch | No fixed limit | Not stated |
Free limits as published by CloudConvert (checked 22 October 2026): CloudConvert pricing. They change often; the paid plans lift them.
Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
A little, because JPG is also lossy, but at 90%+ quality the difference is not visible. Choose PNG for a lossless copy (much larger files).
Are Live Photos supported?
The still image is converted. The short video part of a Live Photo is stored separately and is not included.
Why does the first conversion take longer?
The decoder (about 1.5 MB) is downloaded the first time. After that, conversions run in your browser.
How do I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows without installing anything?
Open this page in Chrome or Edge and drop the HEIC files on the box. Each photo becomes a full-size JPG in about a second and a half on a laptop, with no app, extension or account needed.
