How to convert or compress a video

  1. Drop a video your browser can play (MP4, WebM, and MOV in Safari).
  2. Optionally set a start and end time to trim it; use the player and the "= current" buttons to pick exact points.
  3. Choose the output format, resolution and quality. Lower resolution and "Small file" give the biggest size reduction. Tick Remove audio for a silent video.
  4. Click Convert and keep the tab visible while the clip plays through, then download the result.

What your browser can do (and can't)

This tool re-encodes video with your browser's own recorder (the MediaRecorder API): each frame is drawn at the size you choose and compressed again with the browser's built-in encoder. All current browsers can create WebM. MP4 (H.264) output is available in Safari, and in Chrome and Edge from version 126; the format menu only lists what your browser supports. Processing runs at playback speed, so it suits clips up to a few minutes rather than full films.

Because everything is re-encoded, quality is reduced a little even at "High"; it is a practical tool for making videos small enough to email, upload or share in chats, not a lossless editor. Videos the browser cannot play, such as many HEVC/H.265 files in Chrome, cannot be converted here. The video never leaves your device.

How much smaller will my video get?

Phone videos at 1080p or 4K often shrink by 70–90% at 720p "Medium". Results depend on the content.

Why does converting take as long as the video?

Browsers only offer real-time recording for video encoding, so the clip is played once while it is recorded.

Can I convert MOV to MP4?

Only if your browser can play the MOV file. Safari usually can; in Chrome, H.264 MOV files work but HEVC ones often do not.
