Make a YouTube thumbnail from a photo

Remove the background from your photo, then put the cut-out on a bold gradient or a blurred photo with a white sticker outline, add a short headline in heavy outlined capitals, and save a 3840 × 2160 JPEG, the size YouTube recommends, kept under the 2 MB limit for uploads from a phone. A small 168 × 94 preview shows how it reads in a search list.

Every step runs in your browser; your files are not uploaded.

Steps

  1. Cut out the photo

Choose a photo of yourself or your product. The background is removed on your device by an AI model that downloads once. Check hair and edges, fix them with the touch-up brush, and download the transparent PNG.

  2. Design the thumbnail

The cut-out arrives with a white sticker outline and a soft glow. Type three to five words for the headline; it is set in heavy capitals with a thick dark outline so it still reads when the thumbnail is small. Choose a gradient, a single colour or, by dropping a second photo, a blurred and darkened photo background. Drag the photo and the headline on the preview, keep them inside the dashed safe frame and clear of the bottom-right box where YouTube shows the video length, and check the small preview. Download saves a 3840 × 2160 JPEG under 2 MB.

FAQ

What size is a YouTube thumbnail?

YouTube's help centre recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for video thumbnails (16:9), with a minimum width of 640 pixels. This workflow saves 3840 × 2160 by default, or 1920 × 1080 or 1280 × 720 if you choose.

Why keep it under 2 MB?

YouTube allows 50 MB when you upload a thumbnail from a computer but only 2 MB from a phone. Keeping under 2 MB means the same file works both ways.

Will the headline be readable?

We test it by shrinking thumbnails to 168 × 94 pixels and reading the headline back with OCR. With the default outline, 30 test thumbnails averaged an 8% character error rate, against 49% for the same white text without an outline. Shorter headlines in capitals read best.

Does it add a watermark?

No.
