How to create a WhatsApp link

  1. Choose your country code and type your phone number. Spaces, dashes and the leading 0 of national numbers are handled for you; you can also type a full number starting with +.
  2. Optionally write a message that will be pre-filled when the chat opens, such as "Hi, I'd like a quote".
  3. Copy the wa.me link, test it, or copy a ready-made HTML button for your website.

Where to use click-to-chat links

A WhatsApp link opens a chat with your number in one tap, without the customer saving you as a contact. Small businesses use them on websites, Instagram and TikTok bios, Google Business profiles, email signatures, flyers (turn the link into a QR code) and ads. Pre-filled messages make it easy for people to start the conversation and tell you where they came from, for example "Hi, I saw your ad on Facebook".

The link format is https://wa.me/<number>?text=<message>, where the number is in international format with no plus sign, spaces or leading zeros, which is the most common reason links fail. The message is URL-encoded so emoji, line breaks and accented letters work.

Leave the number empty to create a share link that lets people send your message to any of their contacts, useful for referral campaigns. The link is built in your browser; your number is not sent anywhere.

Does the number need to be on WhatsApp?

Yes. If it is not registered with WhatsApp, the user sees an error saying the number is not on WhatsApp.

Do WhatsApp links work on computers?

Yes. On desktop they open WhatsApp Desktop or WhatsApp Web, and on phones they open the app.

Can I use this with WhatsApp Business?

Yes, wa.me links work with both regular and WhatsApp Business numbers.
