X (Twitter) image sizes

The header (banner) image on an X profile is 1500 × 500 pixels, a 3:1 ratio. The profile photo overlaps its lower left corner, and on phones the top and bottom are cut off a little, so keep the important part of your header in the middle band. The profile photo is uploaded as a 400 × 400 square and shown as a circle. Images in posts display best at 16:9, such as 1600 × 900.

Choose a size above and drop your picture. Crop to fill removes the edges evenly so the image fills the 3:1 frame; for panoramas this works perfectly. If your image is closer to square, consider cropping it yourself first with the image cropper so you choose which strip to keep.

X recompresses headers as JPEG. Saving as high-quality JPEG (90%) gives a file well under the 5 MB limit and avoids surprises.

FAQ

What is the X (Twitter) header size?

1500 × 500 pixels, a 3:1 aspect ratio, up to 5 MB.

Why does my header look cut off?

X crops the header differently on phones and desktop, and the profile picture covers part of it. Keep key content in the centre.

What size should images in posts be?

1600 × 900 pixels (16:9) shows uncropped in the timeline on most devices.
