How to convert PNG to WebP

  1. Drop one or more PNG files on the box above, or tap it to choose them.
  2. The output format is already set to WebP. Adjust the quality or maximum size if you like.
  3. Download each converted file, or all of them as a ZIP.

Why use WebP?

WebP is an image format made by Google for the web. It supports transparency like PNG and photo compression like JPG, and it is usually much smaller than both: a PNG screenshot or illustration often shrinks by 50–80%, which makes pages load faster and improves Core Web Vitals scores. All current browsers support WebP, including Safari since version 14.

At 85% quality, WebP is visually identical for most images. For logos and pixel art where every pixel must stay exact, use 100%: Chrome then uses near-lossless encoding. Transparent areas are kept, so icons and cut-out product photos still work on any background.

Some older programs, such as early versions of Photoshop and some email clients, cannot open WebP. Keep the original PNG if you need to share files with them.

Conversion runs in your browser with the Canvas API, so your images are never uploaded and the page keeps working offline.

FAQ

Does WebP keep transparency?

Yes. WebP supports an alpha channel, so transparent PNGs stay transparent after conversion.

How much smaller is WebP than PNG?

Typically 25–35% smaller in lossless mode and 50–80% smaller at 80–90% quality, depending on the image.

Why did I get a PNG instead of WebP?

A few older browsers cannot encode WebP. Use a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
