How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Drop one or more JPG files on the box above, or tap it to choose them.
  2. The output format is already set to PNG. Adjust the quality or maximum size if you like.
  3. Download each converted file, or all of them as a ZIP.

When PNG is the better choice

PNG stores pixels losslessly, so a file can be edited and saved again and again without getting worse, unlike JPG, which loses a little quality every time it is re-saved. Converting to PNG is useful when you want to edit an image in several steps, add transparency later (for example with a background remover), or upload to a site that only accepts PNG.

Converting cannot restore detail that JPG compression already removed, and the PNG will usually be larger, often 3–8 times, because it stores every pixel exactly. If file size matters, choose "256 colors" under PNG colors: that works well for screenshots and graphics, though photos may show banding.

The output keeps the original width and height unless you set a maximum. Photos rotated by your phone are saved the right way up.

Conversion runs in your browser with the Canvas API, so your images are never uploaded and the page keeps working offline.

FAQ

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. It preserves the image exactly as it is now, but it cannot recover detail lost in JPG compression.

Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG?

PNG is lossless and stores every pixel, while JPG discards detail to save space. Photos are almost always larger as PNG.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

Not automatically: JPG has no transparency, so the background stays as it was. Use the background remover to make it transparent.
