1 MB here means 1,000,000 bytes, a little under 1024 KB, so the file passes whichever way a site counts megabytes.

Compress PDF to 2 MB: Reduce a PDF to under 2 MB for uploads and email. Input: PDF, image files and values you enter. Output: Results shown on the page and a downloaded file. Privacy: Runs in your browser: inputs and files stay on your device and are not uploaded.

How to compress a PDF to 2 MB

  1. Drop your PDF, or several PDFs and photos of documents, on the box. They are combined into one file in the order you add them.
  2. The target is already set to 2 MB. Tick Black and white if colour is not needed.
  3. Press Compress to target. The tool picks the best quality that still fits and shows a before and after preview.
  4. Check that the text is readable, then download.

What fits in 2 MB

Plenty of room: most documents keep a sharp, print-friendly resolution at 2 MB, and many text-only PDFs fit with a lossless re-save, so the text stays selectable. Long scanned documents or many colour photos are reduced to a lower resolution until they fit.

The limit is counted in decimal units (1 KB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes), so the file is accepted whichever way a website counts. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

FAQ

Where do I need a PDF under 2 MB?

Mostly on web forms and portals rather than email. For example, the IRCC (Canada immigration) web form accepts attachments of up to 2 MB each and 3.5 MB in total. Email is usually more generous: Gmail, Outlook.com and Yahoo Mail each allow 25 MB per message, but a 2 MB file is quicker to send, open and forward.

The form also caps the total size. What should I do?

Work out the space per file first. With a 3.5 MB total for two documents, for example, compress each one to about 1.7 MB using the custom target, or combine them into one PDF here and compress that single file to the total.

Will my PDF look worse at 2 MB?

Usually very little. 2 MB leaves room for a sharp, print-friendly resolution for most documents, and text-only PDFs often fit with a lossless re-save that keeps the text selectable. The preview shows the real result before you download.

Is 2 MB counted as 2,000 KB or 2,048 KB?

The tool aims for 2,000,000 bytes, the smaller of the two, so the file passes whichever way the website counts.
