How to tune a guitar online

  1. Press Start tuner and allow the microphone. Guitar mode (standard EADGBE) is selected.
  2. Play the thickest string (low E) on its own and let it ring.
  3. The nearest string is highlighted; turn the tuning peg until the needle is centred and ✓ In tune appears. "Tune up" means tighten, "tune down" means loosen.
  4. Repeat for A, D, G, B and the high E. Tap a string button to hear its reference note.

Standard tuning and tips

Standard guitar tuning from the lowest to highest string is E2 (82.41 Hz), A2 (110 Hz), D3 (146.83 Hz), G3 (196 Hz), B3 (246.94 Hz) and E4 (329.63 Hz). A mnemonic: Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie. Tune up to each note: if a string is sharp, go slightly below the note and come back up, which keeps the gear and string from slipping. New strings stretch and drop in pitch for a day or two, so expect to retune often.

For electric guitars, plug into an amp and hold the phone near the speaker, or tune acoustically near the pickups. After tuning all six strings, check the first one again, since changing tension on the neck shifts the others slightly. The tuner analyses sound locally in your browser.
