How to calculate the grade you need on the final
- Enter your current grade in the class as a percentage.
- Enter how much the final exam is worth, from your syllabus (for example 25% or 40%).
- Enter the course grade you want. The score you need on the final appears instantly, along with what you would get with a perfect score.
The formula
Required final score = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal. With a current grade of 84%, a final worth 30%, and a target of 85%: (85 − 84 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = (85 − 58.8) ÷ 0.3 = 87.3%. For a 90% target you would need 104%, which is impossible without extra credit, so the calculator tells you the best possible result instead.
Check your current grade carefully: it must be the weighted grade of everything except the final. If your teacher's gradebook shows it, use that number; otherwise build it from your category scores in the weighted grade card. Some courses drop the lowest quiz, curve the final, or replace a midterm with the final score, which changes the maths. Use the result to plan revision time: if you need 60% to pass, focus on securing the basics; if you need 95%, aim for every point.
FAQ
What do I need on my final to get an A?
Enter 90 (or your school’s A cut-off) as the target. The calculator shows the required final score.
What if the result is over 100%?
The target is not reachable with the final alone. Ask about extra credit or aim for the highest grade shown as possible.
What if my final is worth 50%?
Enter 50 as the weight. The final then counts as much as all other work combined.
