How to convert grams to cups

  1. Choose the ingredient; the conversion depends on it.
  2. Enter the weight in grams from your recipe.
  3. Read the result in US cups. Switch the target unit to tablespoons for small amounts.

Using metric recipes with cups

Recipes from Europe, the UK and most professional bakers list ingredients by weight. To use them with US measuring cups, divide the grams by the weight of one cup of that ingredient. For example, 250 g of all-purpose flour is just over 2 cups (2.08) at 120 g per cup, while 250 g of sugar is 1.25 cups at 200 g per cup and 250 g of butter is a little over 1 cup.

Results are rounded to two decimal places. Use the table under the result to translate an awkward amount into a combination of cups and spoons: 0.08 cup is about 1¼ tablespoons. Liquids such as milk and water are close to 1 g per ml, so 240 g of milk is about one cup. If precision matters, as it does with bread and pastry, a digital kitchen scale is a worthwhile investment.
