International women's and men's clothing sizes

Sizes are typical equivalents. Brands, especially fast-fashion and Asian brands, vary; check the brand's measurements when you can.

How to convert clothing sizes

  1. Choose the category: women's clothing, men's suits and jackets, men's shirts or men's trousers.
  2. Pick the sizing system you know (for example UK or EU) and your size.
  3. Read the equivalent sizes for the US, UK, Europe, France, Italy, Australia and Japan, the letter size and typical body measurements. The full chart below highlights your row.

How international sizes line up

Women's clothing sizes follow fixed offsets in most charts: a US 8 is a UK 12, an EU/German 38, a French 40, an Italian 44 and an Australian 12. Men's suits and jackets are sized by chest measurement in inches in the US and UK (a 40 fits a 40-inch chest), while European and Italian sizes add 10 (40 becomes 50). Men's shirts use neck size: inches in the US and UK, centimetres in Europe (15.5 in is a 39 or 40). Trousers use waist inches in the US and UK; European sizes are roughly the waist in inches plus 16, so a 32 waist is an EU 48.

These are the typical equivalents retailers publish, but sizing is not standardised by law and brands differ, a phenomenon known as vanity sizing. Japanese and other Asian brands often run one or two sizes smaller. When buying online, compare your actual body measurements with the brand's size chart and read reviews about fit. The converter runs entirely in your browser.
