Cat years explained

Veterinary guidelines from the American Association of Feline Practitioners and the International Society of Feline Medicine compare a cat's first year to the first 15 years of a human life: by 12 months a cat is fully grown and sexually mature. The second year adds about 9 more, so a two-year-old cat is like a 24-year-old adult. From then on, each cat year equals roughly 4 human years. A 10-year-old cat is about 56; a 15-year-old cat about 76.

The life stages used by vets are kitten (up to 6 months), junior (to 2 years), prime adult (3–6), mature (7–10), senior (11–14) and super senior (15+). Indoor cats commonly live 13–17 years and many reach their twenties. Older cats should see a vet at least twice a year, since conditions such as kidney disease and hyperthyroidism are common.
