How to generate random colours
- Press Generate (or the space bar) for a fresh set of random colours.
- Pick how many colours you want, a style (pastel, vivid, dark, earthy, neon or greys) and, optionally, a hue family.
- Lock colours you like with ๐ and keep generating to find matches. Click any HEX, RGB or HSL value to copy it. The link stores the current colours so you can share them.
Random but useful
Purely random RGB values tend to produce muddy, unbalanced colours. This generator works in HSL (hue, saturation, lightness) instead and draws saturation and lightness from ranges that match a style: pastels are light and moderately saturated, vivid colours are fully saturated at medium lightness, dark colours stay low in lightness, earthy tones are muted. The hue can be completely random or limited to a family, for example random blues for a UI theme. Randomness comes from your browser's secure random generator.
Random colours are great for breaking out of habits when designing, generating placeholder avatars and chart series, picking a colour for a game or drawing prompt, and testing contrast. Each swatch shows the HEX code and RGB and HSL values; text on the swatches switches between black and white for readability. For complete colour schemes, try the colour palette generator.
