In Sweden the tax is called moms (mervärdesskatt). To add 25%, multiply the net price by 1.25: kr 100.00 becomes kr 125.00. To remove it, divide the gross price by 1.25: kr 100.00 including VAT is kr 80.00 net plus kr 20.00 VAT. A common mistake is to take 25% off the gross price, which removes too much; the VAT share of a gross price is 1/5, or 20.00%.

At 25%, the VAT inside a price including moms is exactly one fifth (20%). Rates on food have been under political review, so check Skatteverket for the current food rate before you price groceries or restaurant meals.

Standard and reduced rates checked on 20 October 2026 against Skatteverket. Rates can change with each budget; the rate box is editable if a change takes effect.

FAQ

How much moms is in a price?

At 25%, divide the price including moms by 5: a 500 kr price contains 100 kr moms.

How do I remove VAT from a price in Sweden?

Divide the price including VAT by 1.25. For example, kr 125.00 ÷ 1.25 = kr 100.00 net, so the VAT is kr 25.00.
