In France the tax is called TVA (taxe sur la valeur ajoutée). To add 20%, multiply the net price by 1.2: €100.00 becomes €120.00. To remove it, divide the gross price by 1.2: €100.00 including VAT is €83.33 net plus €16.67 VAT. A common mistake is to take 20% off the gross price, which removes too much; the VAT share of a gross price is 1/6, or 16.67%.
French invoices show prices HT (hors taxes, excluding VAT) and TTC (toutes taxes comprises, including VAT). Overseas departments use different rates: 8.5% standard in Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion, and no VAT in Guyane and Mayotte.
Standard and reduced rates checked on 20 October 2026 against the DGFiP (impots.gouv.fr). Rates can change with each budget; the rate box is editable if a change takes effect.
FAQ
What do HT and TTC mean?
HT means excluding VAT and TTC means including all taxes. TTC = HT × 1.20 at the standard rate; HT = TTC ÷ 1.20.
How do I remove VAT from a price in France?
Divide the price including VAT by 1.2. For example, €120.00 ÷ 1.2 = €100.00 net, so the VAT is €20.00.
Does the calculator save my rate?
Yes, the last rate and country you used are remembered in this browser. Nothing is uploaded.
