Instagram Caption Counter

Caption length, hashtag count and the 125-character fold

How to check an Instagram caption

  1. Write or paste your caption, including hashtags and emoji.
  2. The Instagram card shows your count against the 2,200-character limit and warns once you pass the point where the feed cuts the caption with "… more".
  3. The summary line counts hashtags and mentions; Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags per post.
  4. Copy the caption into Instagram when it fits.

Writing captions that get read

Only about the first 125 characters, roughly one or two lines, are visible in the feed before the caption is folded. That opening has to earn the tap: lead with the hook, the question or the key information, not with hashtags or a greeting. Line breaks count as characters and help long captions breathe; a blank line between paragraphs makes them far easier to read on a phone.

For hashtags, Instagram's own guidance is to use a handful of specific, relevant tags rather than dozens of generic ones. Three to five targeted hashtags generally perform as well as thirty, and look less spammy. They can go at the end of the caption or in the first comment. Captions with more than 30 hashtags are posted without the caption.

Reels captions share the same 2,200-character limit. Counting happens in your browser and nothing is posted or stored online.

FAQ

What is the Instagram caption limit?

2,200 characters, including spaces, emoji, hashtags and line breaks.

How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?

Up to 30 per post. Using more prevents the caption from posting. A few relevant hashtags are usually more effective.

How much of a caption shows in the feed?

About 125 characters before the "… more" link, depending on the device and line breaks.
