How to convert WAV to MP3

  1. Drop a WAV file on the box.
  2. MP3 is selected. Choose the bitrate: 320 kbps for the best music quality, 192 kbps for a good balance, 128 kbps for speech and podcasts.
  3. Optionally trim, normalize or convert to mono, then click Download.

Bitrate and size

MP3 compresses audio by discarding sounds people are unlikely to hear. At 192 kbps a stereo MP3 is about 1.4 MB per minute, roughly seven times smaller than a CD-quality WAV (10 MB per minute), and most listeners cannot tell the difference. 320 kbps is the maximum the format allows. Voice recordings in mono at 128 kbps are clear and tiny.

Encoding uses lamejs, a JavaScript port of the well-known LAME encoder, loaded only when you convert. Unusual sample rates are resampled to 44.1 kHz automatically, since MP3 only supports certain rates. WAV files in 24-bit or 32-bit float are decoded by your browser and encoded correctly. Your audio never leaves your device.

FAQ

What bitrate should I choose?

192 or 256 kbps for music, 320 for archiving, 96–128 kbps mono for speech.

Why did the MP3 option fail?

The encoder is downloaded the first time. If you are offline, save as WAV for now.

Is there a file size limit?

Only your device’s memory. An hour of audio converts fine on most computers.
