Word Scramble Game

Unscramble words, or practise a spelling list

How to play Word Scramble

  1. Choose a level, or "My spelling list" to practise this week's spelling words from school.
  2. Unscramble the letter tiles and type the word. Press Hint to fix the next letter in place (it costs 5 points), Shuffle to rearrange the tiles, or Skip.
  3. Faster answers and longer words earn more points. At the end you see the words to practise, and you can challenge a friend to beat your score.

Why word scrambles help spelling

Unscrambling forces you to think about which letters go together: common patterns such as "tion", "ough" or "ie", and where vowels sit between consonants. That is exactly the knowledge good spellers rely on, which is why word scrambles, along with look-cover-write-check, are a classroom favourite for spelling practice. Using your own spelling list turns weekly homework into a game, and the review at the end shows which words still need work.

The built-in levels use a list of common English words, so the answers are words children and adults are likely to know. If you find a different real word using exactly the same letters, it counts too. For a bigger challenge, turn on the timer or try the hard level; for younger children, use "No limit" and easy words. Nothing is recorded; play is entirely in your browser.

Can I use my child's spelling list?

Yes. Choose "My spelling list" and type the words. The list is saved on this device for next time.

How are points scored?

Ten points per letter, minus 5 for each hint and a little for every few seconds taken, with at least 5 points for each correct word.

Is there a version for anagrams?

Try our Anagram Solver and Word Unscrambler for finding every word in a set of letters.
