Uses for calligraphy practice sheets

Calligraphy and hand-lettering need consistent letter height and slant. These sheets add guidelines for the baseline, x-height, ascenders and descenders, plus angled slant lines at about 55°, so you can practise brush-pen lettering, italic, foundational hand and copperplate. They also help children practise neat handwriting with correct letter sizes.

Larger spacing suits brush pens and beginners; smaller spacing suits fine nibs. Place a sheet under thin layout paper so you can reuse it.

Pages are generated as vector graphics at exact real-world sizes, so they print sharply. In the print dialog set scale to 100% (not "fit to page") so the spacing is accurate. You can also change the colour and line weight, add a header for name and date, download an SVG or PNG, or switch to any other paper type. Everything is generated in your browser.

FAQ

What is x-height?

The height of lowercase letters like x, a and o, between the baseline and the midline.

What slant angle do the guide lines use?

About 55° from horizontal, the classic copperplate slant. Italic hands use a gentler slant, so treat the lines as a rough guide.

Can I use it with a brush pen?

Yes. Choose a larger spacing for big brush letters.
