How to make a Markdown table
- Type your headers and cells in the grid. Add or remove rows and columns with the buttons.
- Set each column's alignment with the arrows above its header: left, centre or right. Right alignment suits numbers and prices.
- Already have data? Press Paste CSV / Excel / Markdown and paste cells copied from Excel or Google Sheets, a CSV file, or an existing Markdown table to edit it.
- Copy the generated Markdown into a README, GitHub issue or pull request, documentation page, Notion, Obsidian or a static site.
Markdown table syntax
A Markdown table is a header row, a separator row of dashes and then the data rows, with cells separated by pipes:
| Plan | Price | | ---- | ----: | | Free | $0 |
Colons in the separator set alignment: :--- left, :---: centre and ---: right. Tables are part of GitHub-Flavoured Markdown (GFM) and are supported by GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Reddit, Discord (in some clients), Jira, most documentation tools and static site generators.
The generator escapes pipe characters inside cells as \| so they do not break the table, and turns line breaks into <br>. With Align columns on, the raw Markdown is padded so it also looks tidy as plain text, which makes code review diffs easier to read. Everything runs in your browser and your table is saved locally.
Can a Markdown table cell contain a line break?
Not directly. Use <br> inside the cell, which most renderers including GitHub support. The generator does this automatically.
Can I merge cells?
No. Markdown tables do not support merged cells or row spans; use an HTML table if you need them.
How do I convert Excel to a Markdown table?
Select the cells in Excel, copy, then paste them into the import box. Tab-separated data is detected automatically.
