HTML to Markdown Converter

Convert HTML or copied web content into Markdown

How to convert HTML to Markdown

  1. Paste HTML source code on the left, or switch to Paste formatted text and paste content copied straight from a web page, Google Docs, Word or an email. The formatting is converted, not just the words.
  2. The Markdown appears on the right as you paste or type.
  3. Choose - or * for bullet points, then copy the result or download a .md file.

What is converted

Headings become # to ######, bold and italic become **bold** and _italic_, links and images keep their URLs and titles, and nested bulleted and numbered lists keep their structure and start numbers. Code blocks become fenced blocks with their language preserved from class="language-…", inline code gets backticks, block quotes get >, and tables become GitHub-flavoured Markdown tables. Task-list checkboxes become [x] and [ ]. Scripts, styles and other invisible markup are dropped, and characters that would accidentally start Markdown formatting are escaped.

Common uses include moving blog posts from WordPress to a static site generator such as Hugo, Jekyll or Astro, writing README files from existing documentation, saving articles to Obsidian or Notion, cleaning up content copied from the web, and preparing pages as compact context for an AI assistant: Markdown uses far fewer tokens than HTML.

Conversion happens in your browser using its HTML parser; nothing is uploaded.

Why are some styles, like colours, lost?

Markdown has no syntax for colours, fonts or sizes, so only structural formatting such as headings, emphasis, lists, links and tables is kept.

Does it handle HTML from Google Docs?

Yes. Copy from the document, switch to "Paste formatted text" and paste. Headings, lists, links and bold or italic text are converted.

Can I convert Markdown back to HTML?
