Code 128, EAN-13, UPC-A and EAN-8 barcodes as PNG or SVG

How to create a barcode

  1. Choose the barcode type. Code 128 encodes any text such as SKUs, serial numbers and shipping references. EAN-13, UPC-A and EAN-8 are the retail barcodes printed on products.
  2. Enter the value. For EAN and UPC, type the number without its last digit and the check digit is calculated for you; if you include it, it is verified.
  3. Adjust the bar width and height, and choose whether to print the human-readable digits.
  4. Download a PNG for documents and labels, or an SVG for print and design software, where it stays perfectly sharp at any size.

Which barcode should I use?

Code 128 is a compact, high-density barcode for internal use: inventory, asset tags, warehouse locations, library cards, tickets and shipping labels. It supports letters, digits and punctuation. Numeric values with an even number of digits are encoded in the denser Code C set automatically.

EAN-13 (also called GTIN-13) is the standard retail barcode worldwide, and UPC-A (GTIN-12) is used in the USA and Canada. To sell products in shops or on marketplaces such as Amazon, the number itself must be registered: buy a company prefix from GS1 in your country rather than inventing one, otherwise the code may clash with another product. EAN-8 is for small packages where an EAN-13 would not fit.

For reliable scanning, keep the white margins (quiet zones) around the code, print in black on white, and do not shrink retail barcodes below about 80% of their nominal size (37.3 mm wide for EAN-13).

Barcodes are drawn in your browser as SVG; nothing you type is uploaded.

How is the EAN-13 check digit calculated?

Multiply the 12 digits alternately by 1 and 3 from the left, add them up, and take the amount needed to reach the next multiple of 10. For 400638133393 the check digit is 1.

Can I make a QR code here?

QR codes are 2D codes; use the QR Code Generator on this site for links, Wi-Fi details and contacts.

Will my phone camera scan these?

Many barcode scanner apps and retail scanners read Code 128, EAN and UPC. The built-in camera app on most phones only reads QR codes.
